First Rigging Trade Testing Centre in Khayelitsha

False Bay TVET College proudly announces a historic achievement at its Rigging Centre of Specialisation, based at the Khayelitsha Campus. A significant milestone has been reached as 13 Rigger apprentices completed their trade test under the programme.

The trade testing centre in Khayelitsha is the first of its kind, offering scarce and critical skills for South Africa’s future.

Only two colleges

The Centre of Specialisation is a national skills initiative driven by the Department of Higher Education, in partnership with TVET colleges, SETAs, and employers. Its purpose is to tackle the critical shortage of artisans in South Africa.

Rigging Centres of Specialisation were awarded to only two colleges nationwide: False Bay TVET College in the Western Cape and Umfolozi TVET College in Richards Bay.

Challenging backgrounds

Rigging facilitator at False Bay TVET College, Oscar Kekae, says, “Many of our apprentices come from challenging backgrounds, where opportunities are limited and providing for themselves and their families can be difficult. This qualification gives them a chance to change that reality. ‘

“Some have already been working in the sector without formal recognition, and now with this certification, and the financial backing it can unlock, they will be employable by different industries; they will be able to start their own businesses, grow the rigging industry, and create employment opportunities for others. Their success is proof that education truly transforms lives and communities.”

Programme structure

Entry requirements include a minimum of Grade 9 or higher with Mathematics and Science, though preference is given to Grade 12 graduates. The three-year programme combines:

Theory – classroom learning at college

Practical – hands-on training in college workshops

Workplace learning – placements with partner companies

Upon completion, apprentices undergo a trade test and, if successful, receive a QCTO Red Seal Certificate, enabling them to practice as qualified Rigger artisans across industries such as mining, construction, marine, manufacturing, and energy.
